Our goal

Food insecurity should not be considered an accepted aspect of the impoverished student experience, but a major student health priority” – Roger Hughes

Everyday four in ten post-secondary students in Canada find themselves food insecure to some degree. More than half of the students at Red River college study full time and this makes it difficult for them to work and generate enough income to offset food costs. Many of these students lack the resources to purchase nutritious food for themselves.

The Red River College Students’ Association in conjunction with Winnipeg Harvest,  operates a food bank for the students. The food bank has helped hundreds of students over the last five years on a bi-weekly basis from the Notre Dame and Exchange campus locations. In keeping with the vision, mission and values that the Students’ Association was founded, we want to play our part in building students’ experience. We aim for a safe, positive and inclusive college environment that encourages students to develop confidence in the system designed to help them reach their potential.

The food bank relies heavily on community donation to keep its doors open. To continue supporting the students at Red River college during their studies, the Community Development  students will be hosting a fundraising event on October 26th, from 11am to 3pm at Red River college Notre Dame campus (2055 Notre Dame Avenue). All the funds will go directly to our local, college food bank.

With this event we want to promote the food bank as many students may still be unaware of the resources it provides, as well as if they would qualify.  We invite you to share in this fun filled afternoon. There will be exciting games, a silent auction, 50/50, an indoor market and more.

In an effort to continue supporting our students during the course of their studies, we are requesting donations. There are two ways to donate: monetary donations (cash, credit or debit card), or drop off non-perishable items at the entrance of the college (drop boxes). Visit our website to view details on the work that has been done, as well as the testimonies from students who have shared how helpful the donation packages have been in their time of need. We thank you in advance for your continued support and we look forward to hearing from you.
